Gladys West (nee McIlmoyl)
Peacefully at West Park Long Term Care Centre, Toronto, with her family at her side, on Thursday, January 18, 2018 in her 103rd year, after a struggle with dementia. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, William (Bill) West, brothers Clarence, Clifford and Walter McIlmoyl, sister Velma McConkey and daughter-in-law Susan West (Graham). Sadly missed by children June and John West, grand-daughters Andrea and Christina Laing, their husbands Jonathon Gatehouse and Aaron Goldstein, great grandchildren Maeve, Rory, Sarah and Duncan, step-grandsons Shawn and Andrew Graham, step great grand daughters Libby and Jesse, sister-in-law Jean McIlmoyl, cousin Rosemary McConkey and a loving network of family and friends. Gladys, born on a farm near Peterborough, met Bill in Toronto where both worked in restaurants. They operated Bay Haven resort, now Isaiah Tubbs Inn on the West Lake Road, for thirty years, and promoted tourism in the area with other pioneers of the Quinte’s Isle Tourist Association. On retirement they lived in Belleville, where Gladys enjoyed helping John at his bookstore, Titles, in addition to teaching and practising bookkeeping. From 2000-11 she lived with John and Sue, until at 96 she became a resident at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home. HJM cared for her for four years prior to her move to Toronto. Our thanks to the staffs of both nursing homes, where she received loving attention. Memorial Service Saturday, Feb. 10th, Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street, Toronto, 11:00 a.m. with reception following. Email condolences may be sent to [email protected]. The family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Society in lieu of flowers. Ceremony for scattering her ashes will be held in spring at Lakefield Cemetery.
