BEVAN, Vera (nee Stones)

Vera Bevan (nee Stones)
Surrounded by her daughters, Vera Bevan of Bloomfield Ontario, passed away at Kentwood Nursing Home on Monday, December 9th at the age of 88. Predeceased by her beloved husband Gordon Bevan just 4 months ago. Vera is survived by her daughters Jane (Eric) Davis, Sarah (Andrew) Samatas, her grandson Erik (Cassie) Jakobsen, granddaughters Sofia, Lindsay, Grace, Victoria, Emily and great-grandson Lane. As one of 9 children, Vera will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews in Canada, Spain and the United Kingdom. Mom was an avid cook, baker and homemaker. She looked after children in her home in England and Canada until the age of 50 when she decided to go to College. Mom graduated at the top of her class and also had the honour of being the oldest graduate from Sheridan College. She worked for many years as a Red Cross Homemaker in the position we now call a PSW. When dad took a promotion out west Mom continued her same career path in Ladner B.C. Mom was a very strong and independent woman who left her family in England to follow dad out to Canada. We were very fortunate that dad worked for the airlines so Mom was able to go home frequently and maintain contact with her family. Mom had a great sense of humour and loved her friends and neighbours. She would be the first to offer her help when someone was in need. She was a block parent and offered her home as a safe haven for kids of any age. Our friends were always welcomed with a smile, a cup of tea, and home-cooked food and baked goods. At the end of her life mom was touched by Alzheimer’s, and up to her last day she smiled at everyone even though she no longer had the ability to speak. Not to be outdone by her husband Mom will be a late entrant to Queens University School of Anatomy. Our hope is that a cure will be found for Alzheimers and Mom can help with this discovery. Angels come in many forms and Kentwood Park Nursing home has many on their staff. Mom received compassionate and professional care every day she was there and we are eternally grateful to them. They not only looked after our mom but cared for my dad up to his last day and shared tears and welcoming hugs in our Mom’s final days. We had a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Dec 14th from 10:00 till 11:30 at Kentwood Nursing Home. Donations in Mom’s memory can be made to The Alzheimer’s Society or Kentwood Nursing Home Residents Council. Arrangements entrusted to Hicks Funeral Home, 2 Centre Street, Picton. 613-476-5571 www.hicksfh.com
