Attempted murder charges laid in relation to violent assault

A Picton man remains behind bars and is facing a slew of new charges in relation to a violent assault in Picton last month.

On Feb. 8, 2020 at approximately 3:00 p.m. officers with the Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a serious assault. The victim had been airlifted to a Kingston hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 52-year old male from Picton was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault a short time later.

His name will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim.

As a result of the ongoing investigation by members of the Prince Edward OPP Crime Unit, East Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS) and the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) the accused has been charged under the Criminal Code (CC) with:

•Attempt to commit murder – 239(1)(b)

•Breach of recognizance – 811

•Using violence to prevent a person from receiving medical care – 423(1)(a)

•Forcible confinement – 279(2)

•Fail to provide necessaries of life – 215(2)(a)(ii)

•Administer noxious thing with intent- endanger life or cause bodily harm – 245(a) – Four counts

•Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm – 264.1(1)(a)

•Assault with a weapon – 267(a)- Three counts

•Overcome resistance by administering or attempting to administer a drug- 246(b) •Assault – 266- Two counts

•Firearm – use while committing offence- 85(1)(a)

The accused remains in custody until a scheduled appearance today at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.

A publication ban has been issued by the court. The victim remains in hospital in Kingston hospital.
