Greater Than Canteen Grand Opening – Providing Third Spaces and Affordable Food to Local Youth

On August 7th starting at 10:30am Greater Than County Youth Collective will be hosting an official grand opening for their canteen and programming space at the Prince Edward County Skatepark. Although Greater Than has been operating the space since early July, this event is meant to officially kick off their residency, promote the programs and opportunities they offer, share information from other youth focused organizations, and host a fun day for young people in our community.
These two issues were the driving force behind the canteen. They host an indoor programming space where they have crafts, mindfulness activities, mental health resources or just a place to hangout, which is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10-4pm, with occasional evening hours as well. The canteen also offers healthy foods such as smoothies, veggies and dip, fresh fruit, popcorn and more, with the most expensive menu items being $3. If that is still not accessible for youth, the municipality has supported the project by contributing funds to be able to provide menu items for free when youth indicate that cost is a barrier.
Greater Than is a collective working together in the County to improve the lives of youth, now and in the future, made up of people who care for, work for, or are youth. We want to create a community culture that enables everyone to reach their potential. Working together we are Greater Than the sum of our parts.
