In Memoriam

LOCKYER, Nellie Ann Maude (Sprague)

May 7th, 1934 - December 23rd, 2023

Following a sudden illness, Nellie (Nell) Lockyer passed away peacefully in the afternoon of December 23rd surrounded by the love of her family and a view of her beloved Bay of Quinte. Nell was the fifth child of Merle and Clarence Sprague of Mountain View, Prince Edward County. Nell was predeceased by her two sisters, Evelyn (Wilson) and Pauline, and her brother Cal. She is survived by her two other brothers, George and Glen. Nell was a lifelong resident of Prince Edward County and Belleville; she attended the one room schoolhouse in Mountain View throughout her elementary education, followed by Belleville Collegiate Institute for her secondary education. After graduating high school, Nell attended Peterborough Teacher’s College. In subsequent years – while raising a young family – Nell earned her Bachelor of Arts with distinction from Queen’s University. Nell married her husband, Donald (deceased), in 1955; at the time of his death, Nell and Don had been married 63 years. The couple have three daughters who were the light of their lives: Lindsey Grant (Patrick), Jennifer Allen (Stephen), and Paula (Keri Durant); seven grandchildren: Caitlin, Benjamin, Victoria, Adrian, Christian, Martin, and Demeter; and three great-grandsons: Atlas, Sullivan, and Clarke. Nell and Don were so proud of their three girls and the families they created. Both Nell and Don taught for the Hastings County Board of Education. In 1965, the family embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: Don took an international teaching posting in Bichi, Northern Nigeria, and the young family moved halfway across the world for what would be a defining experience in their lives. Nell often referred to their time in Nigeria as some of the best years of her life. Nell and Don’s adventurous spirit continued into their retirement from education. The two traveled all over the world in their later years, adding to their lifetime of adventure and travel memories. The family sends their sincere appreciation for the compassion and attentiveness shown to Nell by the nurses and support staff of the Emergency Department and 6th floor of Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward in Nell’s honour.
