When Jim Van Horne passed at the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital on Friday December 29, 2023, at the age of 74, he left his family and friends deeply saddened by his departure but profoundly enriched from having known him. Jim was the beloved husband for 50 years of Elizabeth “Liz” (nee Hamilton) and the loving father of Meghan (David Wheatley) of Cherry Valley, and Caitlin and Patrick, both of Milton. He is survived by his siblings Maralaina Halliday, and Sharon Danenas, both of Winnipeg and Will Penner (Pearl Doerksen) of Cayley, Alberta. Son of the late Norman and Marjorie Van Horne, Jim was raised in Bloomfield and he and Liz had recently relocated to Picton from Mississauga. Like many young men, Jim left the County for the bright lights of Toronto where he worked for Seiberling Rubber Company and Goodyear Tire until they closed. Jim retired in April 2015 after twenty-five years with Mississauga Transit. He was a friendly face to his passengers and enjoyed getting to know the regular riders on his route. Jim was generous, sympathetic and good-humoured. He made friends easily and once made, kept those friendships for life. Times he spent with family and friends were his greatest joy. Talking and laughing, sharing stories and jokes over a good meal, a good bottle of wine or glass of beer, and sometimes a good scotch was the best way to spend time. A proud parent, Jim delighted in the accomplishments of his children and was always there to provide support and encouragement. From an early age Jim had an aptitude for and a love of music that continued throughout his life. He played guitar and ukulele, amassed an impressive record collection, was an avid concert goer and most importantly, passed his love of music on to others, particularly his children. Jim Van Horne will be remembered fondly by his extended family and his friends. Those memories will be a comfort and a blessing to all who knew and loved him. Mr. Van Horne rested at Rushnell Funeral Homes – Picton Chapel, 33 Main Street, (613-476-2450). Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at a later date. If desired, donations to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation “Back the Build” or a Food Bank in your community would be appreciated. Online condolences at: www.rushnellfuneralhomes.
