Husayn Banani

March 10, 1933 - October 9, 2024

The Banani family is saddened to announce the passing of Husayn Banani on October 9, 2024, in Hillier, Ontario. Husayn was born in Tehran, Iran, the fifth of six children. As a teen, he was sent to Great Britain with his brother Jacques to pursue an English education. They attended the Millfield School in Somerset, after which Husayn completed a degree in electrical engineering at Imperial College London. In 1958, he moved to Canada. Like many newcomers, his lack of “Canadian experience” meant that he first had to take non-engineering roles. An early job took him to Elliot Lake, where he spent several years. Eventually Husayn settled in Toronto and founded A.H. Banani & Associates Ltd., a consulting engineering firm, in 1965. His move to Toronto was important professionally, but also personally, as it was there that he was introduced to and fell in love with Anne Mudgett. They would later tell their children that they knew from their very first meeting that they wanted to marry, and so they did in February 1967. In addition to Husayn’s commitment to his career and dedication to his family, he also served for many decades as a member of local and national administrative bodies of the Baha’i community of Canada. His faith served as an anchor throughout his life and provided the ethical framework that guided him. His insistence on the fair treatment of all people was a core principle of his first company and then of Mulvey and Banani International Inc, which he co-founded in 1981. When the time came to retire, Husayn and Anne decided that their city days were done. In 2007 they moved to Prince Edward County where they met many new friends and found great joy and satisfaction in establishing new community. As the years went on and their health waned, those County friendships were sources of invaluable support, for which the whole family is deeply grateful. As he had hoped, Husayn passed away at home, with his family around him. Husayn is predeceased by his siblings and by his beloved wife, Anne. He has been interred by her side in Rose Cemetery, Waupoos. He is survived by his children Sarah (Jason), and Michael (Erin) and his two grandsons Augie and Coco whom he treasured. A memorial event will be announced at a future date. Donations in Husayn’s name may be made to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation “Back the Build” campaign: https://www.pecmhf
