Lois Bird (nee Burgess)

April 26, 1938 - April 7, 2026

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, Lois Bird, in her 88th year, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.  Born on Tuesday, April 26, 1938, to Robert and Evelyn Burgess, Lois was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 69 years, Robert “Bob” Bird; her children, Robert Bird (Kim), Sheryl Ewart (Markus Kern), Janine Allsopp (David Allsopp), and Brent Bird (Sherri Karimi); her eight grandchildren, Marissa, Joshua, Cullen, Brittany, Tyler, Spencer, Carlin, and Jahna; and her six adored great-granddaughters, Olivia, Malin, Everly, Riley, Emilie, and Juliette. Lois grew up in Stirling, Ontario, and after graduating high school, attended the Ontario Business College. Upon completing her studies, she began her career as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Operations at Corby Distillery in Belleville. She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Bob, on Saturday, June 1, 1957, and together they began building their family, welcoming four children in just seven years. Early in their marriage, while Bob was with the RCAF, Lois faced the immense challenge of raising three young children overseas in Germany; far from home, without family support, and often without modern conveniences. With characteristic strength and resilience, she met those challenges with grace. A devoted homemaker, Lois created warm and welcoming homes for her family in every place they lived – establishing an incredible 18 households over the years, including their beloved retirement home in Picton, Ontario, in 1992. Family was at the heart of everything Lois did. She was a loving and encouraging mother, a devoted wife, and a proud and caring grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the rock of her family – steadfast, compassionate, and strong.  Lois would “put on her lipstick” and face the world with quiet determination, courage and dignity during some of the most difficult times. She led by example, holding her family together with love, kindness and unwavering support. Lois was known for her warmth and hospitality.  An excellent cook and gracious host, she welcomed all with open arms. She was a loyal and supportive friend to many and had a wonderful sense of humour – something she relied on during the busy years of raising four young children. In retirement, Lois and Bob settled in Picton, where she found great joy and built many lasting friendships. She loved golfing as a member of the Picton Golf and Country Club, playing bridge (often hosting lively and laughter-filled games), and swimming at the local pool. Lois was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. In keeping with Lois’ wishes, cremation has taken place. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at Glenwood Cemetery in the Summer of 2026. A Celebration of Lois’ Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, one of Lois’ favourite charities is Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors, and donations would be appreciated by her family. Arrangements entrusted to Rushnell Funeral Homes – Picton Chapel, 33 Main Street (613-476-2450). Online condolences: www.rushnellfuneralhomes.com
