HUBBS, Luisa (nee Licop) RN
Luisa was a determined woman, unstoppable when she set her mind to a task.
She was born in Manila, Philippines on October 11, 1937. After graduating from Far Eastern University in Nursing in 1958, she left all that was familiar and made her way to Minnesota to work at the Mayo Clinic. It was there that she first saw snow. When Luisa landed at the airport, she saw all the middle aged men with bald spots (which she mistook for a Bishop’s Tonsure), and thought that a place with so many Bishops must be a nice place to live. She could also be very funny.
A few years later, Luisa made her way to Toronto to work as a Registered Nurse at Toronto Western Hospital. There, she won a Miss Independence beauty pageant and met Wayne Hubbs, who became her beloved husband and partner of 59 years. Together, they raised a family where she was a loving mother to Miranda, Randall (Barb), Melinda (deceased), and proud grandmother to Cooper and Bailey. They lived in many cities across the country and Luisa was a Registered nurse in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
When their nest emptied, Wayne and Luisa found the time to travel, with a particular affection for France and later, European river cruises. Luisa was always stylishly attired and never left the house without being fully made up and in heels. Often, she could be spotted dancing when she thought no one was watching. She laughed easily, but never more than at her husband’s corny jokes.
Her determination was evident as she held on to celebrate her 87th birthday, but her life ended too soon on October 15, 2024 with her beloved husband, Wayne, at her side.
There will be a private family visitation on Monday, October 21 at 1pm at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home, 2241 New Street, Burlington, with a Celebration of Life to follow in the spring, because Luisa did not want people to shed tears, and hoped that people would gather to laugh and tell happy, funny stories.
For those willing and able, donations can be made to The Burlington Food Bank. Online condolences at www.dbburlington.ca
