It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marlene Van Dusen, who passed away on September 8, 2026, at the age of 60.
Marlene was the beloved daughter of the late Sandra Barnard, and a much-loved sister to Tim (Mel) VanDusen and Steve VanDusen. She was predeceased by many cherished members of her family, including her mother Sandra, whose loss she carried with her throughout the years.
Above all else, Marlene loved her family. She was the proud and devoted mother of her sons, Robert Laverne Heinamaki and Justin Ryan Heinamaki, and a loving grandmother to Audrina, Robert Jr., Atlas and Amari. Her boys and her grandchildren held an enormous place in her heart, and she was never shy about letting people know how much they meant to her.
Marlene was also a cherished aunt and a member of a large extended family, including the VanDusen, Barnard and Ferguson families, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones whose lives were woven into hers over the years.
Anyone who knew Marlene knew how deeply she loved animals. They weren't simply pets to her—they were family. She loved and cared for Rip, Hush, Hush and Meom, and we take comfort in imagining her reunited with the animals who went before her and making sure to visit Cooper, Sadie and Smitten along the way.
Marlene also treasured her friendships. She could spend hours talking with the people she cared about, and those long conversations, stories and connections became an important part of the lives of those fortunate enough to call her a friend. She built meaningful friendships throughout her life, including during her years in Kenora, a community that also held an important place in her family's story.
Marlene will be remembered for the enormous love she had for her boys, her grandchildren, her animals and her friends. She leaves behind countless conversations, stories and memories that will continue to be shared by the people who loved her.
Though her life ended far too soon, the love Marlene gave does not end with her passing. It remains in her children and grandchildren, in her family and friends, and in all the small memories that will continue to bring both tears and smiles in the years ahead.
A Celebration of Life for Marlene will be held in the Far Verandah at The Waring House, where family and friends are invited to gather, share memories and stories, and celebrate her life together. Light refreshments will be provided, and a hosted bar will be available.
Marlene will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
