William George Kidnew was known by everyone in Picton as Bill. A husband, a father, a grandfather, and a minister with the Anglican Church of Canada. Always present and helpful to everyone who needed him. Always ready with a kind word, a helping hand, and encouragement. A good-hearted Grandpa who will be no longer.
Bill settled in Picton in the late 60’s with his wife and two children. He led a quiet life for himself, but a life rich in charity and love for those around him. He enjoyed some of the gifts of life: his afternoon beverage, his music, golf, and a game of bridge, but he also gave back – to his church, to his lodge, and to those that needed his help.
Bill was a quiet and hospitable man with a generous heart. The smile never faded from his face and he was always up for the next adventure, including his yearly trips to Toronto for a concert and a one-week car trip from Picton to San Diego exploring the sites and the curiosities along the way, visiting families, and enjoying an orange he had just cut from a tree – something he had never experienced before.
Bill was an independent man and he managed himself with the grace and dignity of a community elder. A role model for all to follow: Be kind, be respectful, do no harm.
So as we are reflecting on Bill’s life, we remember his smile, his love for Myrna (oh, how his eyes lit when the two were together), his pride for his children, his excitement when an adventure came up, and his innocence when it came to caring for others.
After a battle with dementia and declining health, Bill has passed away leaving behind a legacy of a daughter, a son, three grandsons, two granddaughters, and four great grandchildren – and a pair of big shoes to fill.
Safe travels, Bill. You will be missed but you will always be remembered . . .
A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Westlake Terrace for their compassionate environment and their wonderful care.
