On Saturday evening last a runaway horse without a driver crashed into Mayor Heaslip’s auto, seriously injuring the horse and smashing the auto, the Mayor, however, fortunately escaped unhurt.
It appears that a horse and buggy belonging to Mr. Leslie McCaw of Woodrows, was tied in the Queen’s Hotel yard during the evening. The horse became restless and broke loose starting west on Main street and breaking into a run. Dr. Heaslip was coming down Main street at the time and endeavored to get out of the way but the horse crashed into the auto, its head going through the windshield and striking the radiator with its chest. The force of the collision brought both horse and auto to a standstill, the horse being entangled in the windshield and smashing the radiator, headlights, engine cover, and doing other damage to the auto. The horse was badly cut around the neck by the broken glass and was also cut severely elsewhere. Although badly smashed up, the auto was driven under its own power from the scene of the accident, about in front of the Main Street Methodist Church, to Johnston & Vandewater’s garage.
This is the same car that broke through the ice and went to the bottom of the bay, near Glenora last year.
