Those in attendance at the concert in the First Methodist Sunday School room on Friday evening last, held under the auspices of the 155th Battalion, had the opportunity of enjoying one of the best musical programmes that has been presented in Picton for some time.
Owing to numerous other attractions the attendance was not as large as the excellence of the programme deserved. The extremely cold weather also no doubt, deterred many from venturing out.
The programme was given by local talent, assisted by the 155th Battalion, Pte. Burke of Belleville, and Mr. Marcel Anderson, concert pianist of Deseronto.
The music of the orchestra, composed of five pieces—violin, cornet, cello, trombone and saxophone, was of very high class and elicited hearty applause from the audience.
Col. Adams and the other officers of the 155th are to be congratulated upon having such a fine orchestra. The members of the orchestra formerly belonged to the Belleville 15th Battalion Band who, it appears, have nearly all enlisted with the 155th Battalion.
Pte. Burke of the 155th Battalion, formerly of Belleville, sang two baritone solos in excellent style. He is one of the best male singers that has been heard in Picton for some time. He has a rich strong voice and sings with great ease and power.
Mr. Marcel Anderson, the pianist, gave three numbers which were very heartily received by the audience, Mr. Anderson very kindly responding the applause with encore numbers.
Mrs. Currie, who is a favorite with a Picton audience, was heard to advantage in two selections, as well as in a duet with Miss O. Platt, while Miss Platt’s rendering of two of Gena Branscombe’s composition were given in her usual excellent manner.
At the close of the concert the officers of the 155th invited those who had assisted in the programme to partake of refreshments at Gilbert’s Restaurant, where a pleasant time was spent and some interesting addresses given by those present.
