SURPRISE PARTY FOR HERBERT BULL ON EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY
On Tuesday evening of last week a large number of neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr. Herbert Bull to give him a surprise party on his 80th birthday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bull had previously been invited out for tea by a beguiling neighbor and were just issuing forth in their Sabbath Day Attire when they were surrounded by a motley throng bearing large baskets and taking possession of their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Bull were taken completely by surprise but in their genial, hospitable way made their guests most royally welcome.
Soon this quiet home became a lively bustling centre. There were women in the kitchen unpacking delicious eats and women in the dining room setting long tables. A sumptuous dinner was soon served.
The evening was spent with music and visiting. Mr. Bull played some very nice records on the phonograph.
Notwithstanding Mr. Bull’s 80 years he is smart and well and appears yet like a young man. Here’s wishing him many happy returns of the day.
REPAIRS FINISHED AT LOCAL ARMORIES
A. E. Strickland, contractor for repairs to Picton Armories including the laying of 10,000 feet of new floor, finished the work last Friday. Inspection of the completed job was made on Tuesday by a government official who expressed complete satisfaction. The Armories was turned over to the militia on the same day as ready for use. The first event to be held there will be an Easter Monday dance under the auspices of officers of C Company and a Motor Show will follow the same week.
A large part of the old floor which was warped and made useless by rain and weather following the unroofing by wind last summer, was taken up and a new maple floor laid. Officers’ room, Sergeants’ room and recreation room have had the floors varnished, and the walls and ceiling white-washed; company rooms downstairs have been refinished, metal ceilings and concrete floors installed; plastering has been done where necessary; plumbing and heating nave been repaired. The entire job does great credit to Contractor A. E. Strickland who sub-let plastering to L. C. Ward, painting to Greenfield and Minaker, plumbing to Adams & Vandusen and sanding to Fred Hubbs.
