C.S. Lines Expect Last Boat Of Season Here Saturday
Busy Scene at Local Harbor as Huge Freighters Call For Canned Goods – Much Employment Given.
The last boats for the C. S. L. docks this year are expected to arrive here around the 24th of this month. One is expected to take east bound freight, and one to the west.
The last C. S. L. boat last year was in Picton on November 25.
On Monday night, the Canadian, en route for the west, tied up in Picton, loading canned goods at the C. S. L. wharf. She docked at midnight. Finishing loading early Tuesday morning, the Canadian was warped over to the Picton Coal Company’s wharf to pick up 1200 cases of canned goods. These were to have been called for by one of the Tree Line freighters, but she was unable to keep the schedule.
As soon as the Canadian left the docks, the Calgarian, which had docked here around 2.30, started loading canned goods for eastern points and export. The storehouse was fairly well filled with canned goods. This week end or early next week will see the shipping by this line finished for the season.
The local harbour has been very busy this season, many boats calling regularly for canned goods. A large number of otherwise unemployed men were able to find considerable employment during the summer months.
