Pt. Traverse, Dec, 19.–With the departure of lighthouse men this week, two men, Mr. Jacob Greeves and companion are the sole inhabitants on the Main Duck Island, and will spend the winter there. The two men’s duties during the long and desolate winter months will be the caring for stock and harvesting of ice for the island fishery. Mr. Greeves, who has spent three winters before on the Ducks, and his companion, were provisioned with food supplies, reading material, etc., before Mr. Cole left for his winter home at Cape Vincent, N.Y.
The only communication to the island is by radio, as the marine radio beacon, located in the fog station, is closed for the year with the termination of navigation. And until the reopening of navigation next April the two men will live in a state of remoteness, segregated from the outside world with their only diversion being a radio, if they possess one, and the reading material they have.
LETTERS TO SANTA CLAUS
Dear Santa Claus:
How are you keeping. I suppose you are coming to Picton this year in an aeroplane instead of a sleigh. I will leave you a cup of tea and a piece of bread. I guess I have been a pretty good boy and I’m eight years old and I’ll soon be nine. I suppose you would like to know where I live. Well if you do I will tell you. I live on Talbot Street and I live in a yellow house. I guess it’s about time I was telling you what I want for Xmas. I would like a wagon, and a dump truck, and a tow truck. To my best friend Santa Claus, from Richard Bayly, Picton.
