1944: Fellowship Cottage Proved Popular Centre with RAF

During the summer months, members of the R.A.F. have been privileged to enjoy weekly gatherings at “Fellowship Cottage”. The idea originated with Padre Guinness, who desired to establish a centre where Christian men could meet once a week, and where wholesome recreation would be available.

One of Mr. Maus’ cottages on East Main St., situated on the Bay shore, was secured. First, it was completely re-decorated inside and out. Pictures of Britain hang on the walls and the Station Workshops provided many articles.

After the cottage was ready, efforts were directed toward the building of a jetty for boats. Mr. Maus rendered valuable assistance, with FO. Scott in charge. Then came the campaign to assemble a fleet of boats, and the P.S.I. gave financial help which made possible the purchase of two 18-foot canoes, one cedar skiff, 12-foot canoe, cedar boat for outboard motor, and flat-bottomed boats for fishing.

A raft, used at previous summer camps, was repaired and improved, and is topped by a diving tower.

In addition, there are facilities for table tennis; weiner roasts are held, music provided and weekly discussions held Sunday nights. Family prayers conclude the day.

Many airmen have found it a pleasant spot to spend leaves, and facilities permit them to do their own cooking.

Padre Guinness has given splendid leadership and the centre has proven a great boon to the airmen. The name “Fellowship Cottage” pretty well sums up the atmosphere of the club.

Two Picton Men Return After Service Overseas

Glad to be back in Canada, but sorry that they may miss the opportunity of marching into Berlin with the Allied Forces, two officers and 21 other ranks arrived in Kingston Saturday from European battlefronts.

Included were Pte. Pete H. Mitchell and Pte. Cecil Roy Goodman, both of Picton.

Pte. Goodman arrived home in time to see his father, Mr. Ernest Goodman, who passed away at his home, Main Street East, after a lengthy illness.

Pte. Mitchell was a member of the famed H.P.E. Regiment and just before he was posted for duty which brought him back to Canada, he visited Rome, which he says is a “lovely” city.
