Criticism of local police activities, which has become a regular monthly topic of discussion at Town Council meetings, again occupied Council’s attention at Monday night’s meeting. As a result, a meeting between police and council was called last night in an attempt to clarify the situation. It was also decided to call in the fire chief and assistant chief regarding attendance of firemen at local fires.
Councillor McGibbon told council a business man had said it was all he could do to push his way through the crowd of drunks and loiterers on the sidewalk in front of the Royal Hotel on a recent Saturday. It is a funny thing if the police can’t do something about this situation he said.
Mayor Warren — At our last meeting we got into heated discussion regarding the local police. It is not fair for us to talk behind their backs. We should meet them and instruct as to what is expected of them.
Councillor Cockburn — I am going to resign as chairman of police. I don’t know what the duties of the police are and I think it is unfair that a new councillor should have to act as chairman of this committee. I don’t blame the police, but I think the police set-up here is something the town should be ashamed of. If I don’t get the whole-hearted co-operation of council I intend to resign as chairman.
Councillor McKibbon — I feel Mr. Cockburn is the man for the job and I for one will back him up.
Councillor Moore said he took plenty of abuse when he was on the police committee. I say call the police in and tell them what’s what. The town is not going to pay these men to walk around as ornaments.
The Mayor — What we want is policemen who will exercise a little grey matter—I feel we have the men—all they need is instruction.
Council turned down the proposed purchase of a local police car when the matter came to vote.
