If you want something fun to do in our fantastic community this summer that won’t get you too hot, look no further than the Picton Euchre Club, which hosts games in the nice cool basement of Hope Church every Wednesday at 1 p.m.
“It’s mainly seniors that come but everyone is welcome,” said organizer Vance Jeffries. “There’s a $3 charge but at the end of it we have cash prizes.”
The Club originally played in The Orange Lodge on Bridge Street, a once beloved spot. It has now moved to Hope Church. The name stands for Helping Others Prosper Eternally.
The game is very social. “After each game the winners move on, so you play with different people each time,” explained Mr. Jeffries.
With the support of volunteers as well as that of Foodland and its bakery, the club now has over 30 players, many of whom bring sandwiches to the games.
Foodland also contributes. “There are a few of us in the bakery that get together a nice little assortment of sweets for them,” said Sally Griffin.
If players aren’t mobile, volunteers are always glad to fetch tea, coffee and treats.
“We have a 96-year-old every week. His hands are not well enough to play. But, he comes on his walk and he visits with people,” said Mr. Jeffries.
Players agree the event adds fun to their week. “It’s good to get out and be with people,” said Ruth Richards.
“I curl in the wintertime so I have to get out and play cards in the summer. My wife wouldn’t allow me to sit at home,” added Ray Harding as everyone at the table laughed.
There is a deep sense of community among the players. They would love to welcome some new faces. “There’s always an empty chair to fill somewhere,” said Mr. Harding.
