The impetus for the County of Prince Edward to source, hire and orientate its next Chief Administrative Officer has a deadline.

Last week, Acting CAO Robert McAuley announced that he will be retiring by the end of the year.

“I have enjoyed my 30 years in local government. In particular, I have welcomed the opportunity over the past 10 years to serve The County and my community,” stated McAuley. “The time has come, however, for me to focus on other areas of importance in my life.”

In April 2019, McAuley accepted County Council’s invitation to work as Acting CAO.

McAuley took on the action role when the ‘working relationship’ between then-CAO James Hepburn and the municipality ended.

Since coming to work for The County, McAuley has held various positions, overseeing the County’s Engineering, Development and Works Department for nearly 10 years before becoming the Executive Director of Infrastructure, Capital and Development Initiatives last year.

Mayor Steve Ferguson lauded McAuley for his continued service to The County.

“I thank Robert for his outstanding service to the Prince Edward County community and for the many contributions he has made to it over the years,” said Ferguson. “Further, speaking on behalf of council and staff, I extend best wishes to Robert, his wife Margaret and his family during his retirement years.

Interviews for a new CAO are expected to begin next week.

The CAO Recruitment Committee, comprised of Mayor Steve Ferguson and Councillors Stewart Bailey, Janice Maynard, Brad Nieman and Bill Roberts-with the assistance of executive search firm Feldman Daxon Partners-has identified a short list of candidates. The committee expects to replace McAuley before his retirement.
