People with health or mobility issues might wish to consider applying for an accessible parking permit.

ServiceOntario issues accessible parking permits that have security features that make the permit easy to verify and difficult to duplicate.Permit holders must always display the permit on the dashboard or sun visor of the car they are travelling in so the permit number and expiry date is clearly visible.

Only the person named on the permit can use it to park in an accessible parking space. The permit must be returned to a ServiceOntario centre when the person named on the permit is either deceased, the holder is no longer a person with an eligible health condition, the permit contains incorrect information or, the permit is cancelled. If another person uses the permit, it can result in fines of up to $5,000 and the permit may be seized.

To check to see if you’re eligible to have an accessible parking permit go to the www.ontario.ca website and search for “accessible parking permit”. You can print the application from the website and then take it to your physician for a signature.

You can also go to the local Service Ontario Centre to apply for the accessible parking permit. The local office is at 1 Pitt Street in Picton, on the corner of Pitt and Portland streets and you’ll find lots of free parking. It’s in the courthouse. The centre is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on public holidays. There is a fully accessible entrance located at the Pitt Street entrance.

Once you have an accessible parking permit you can take it with you in your car, or when you’re in someone else’s car, and then you can park in the accessible parking spots without risking the $350 fine. If you have an accessible parking permit you can use it to park in Picton.

This is a quote from the County web site: “The County is also making it easier for holders of accessible parking permits to visit various downtown Picton locations. In addition to the existing designated accessible parking spaces, permit holders can park in any space free of charge.” If you don’t have a computer remember that you can use one at any County library branch. They also have people to help you find what you need online.
