Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue Crews from Stations 1 (Picton) and 2 (Hallowell) were busy again yesterday afternoon with a field fire and a water rescue in a two-hour window.
A field fire on the south side of Fry Road just north of Picton was the first call. A vehicle driven by a farm hand across a harvested wheat field became involved. Approximately four acres of stubble burned before crews could quell the blaze.
A pair of local farmers attended with tractors pulling discing implements. The coordinated efforts helped to mitigate the spread.
Just as Fire & Rescue was standing down from the fire, around 4:30 p.m., a 911 call for a person stranded in the middle of Athol Bay off the shore of Outlet Beach came over the radio.
Crews attended the scene at the end of Welsh Lane in Athol, where a man in an inner tube had cramped up and drifted 2km off shore. Members in the rescue craft safely towed him to shore without incident.
No injuries were reported at either call.
