More than 20 local artists showing work in range of media until May 21

Spring has arrived in Picton, thanks to the Arts On Main Gallery.

The opening reception for “Spring Colour”, an exhibition of work by more than 20 county artists, attracted a packed house to the downtown gallery on Saturday. The show featured two guest artists, painters Annik Depres and Bill Hurst.

If you missed the opening, you can still drop in and see the great selection of art, as the show will remain on display until May 21.
The gallery, located opposite the Regent Theatre in Picton, is open all year, seven days a week, said gallery chair Judy Kent, and has been open for 11 years now.

“We’re a co-operative gallery with about 25 local artists,” Kent said. “We have a great stable of artists, all from the County.”

The artists cover a wide variety of disciplines, and that is reflected in the show. Looking for something whimsical? Check out Iris Casey’s wrapped wire art, or Florence Chik-Lau’s animal sculptures. Looking for something to wear? Hand-painted silk scarves by Amelie Koning will catch your eye. And the show has paintings in every medium — acrylics, oils, airbrushed, watercolours and mixed media, to name a few.

There are still life paintings, landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes, plus colourful roosters, old cars and abstracts. The show also includes stained glass, other types of glass sculpture, pottery, hand-turned wooden bowls, folk art and much more. There are even sheep wearing brightly coloured sweaters, all marching happily in single file across a painted country landscape.

Kent said this exhibition is one of four the gallery holds each year, including summer, autumn and a special show and sale before Christmas.
