The Picton Pirates got back on to the right side of the win-loss column with a 6-1 victory in North Kawartha Saturday night.
The victory moved the Pirates (7-3-0) into a tie for second place in the Tod Division with Napanee at 14 points. The Frankford Huskies who visit Picton on Thursday evening lead the loop with 18 points but Picton has two games in hand on the Pups. The Pirates wind up their weekend in Amherstview on Sunday.
The Bucs rode a strong first period in Apsley to victory Saturday. Showing no signs of bus legs, Picton outshot the Knights 23-1 in the opening frame and sailed out to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Colby Leaver, Gerrit Kempers and Trevor Brooks.
In the second, the Knights had the only tally as Hunter Todd banged home his first of the season on the power play. The goal midway through the second period was the only blemish on Pirates starter Nic McGrayne’s night as he made 23 stops for his third win of the year.
In the third, Picton pounded the North Kawartha net for another troika of tallies.
Dorian Rimmer cashed in his first Provincial Junior Hockey League goal at 4:17 while Parker Mattis added his first of the year at 8:14.
Finally, Zack Brooks had an unassisted power play goal at 17:28.
Rookie Kaleb Baldwin picked up a pair of helpers from the blueline. Both Mr. Baldwin and Trevor Brooks have been named to the PJHL East Conference Top Prospects team who will battle their South Conference counterparts in Wellesley, ON Nov. 2.
On Thursday, Picton was unable to get much traction against the visiting Napanee Raiders and fell 4-1.
The clubs traded goals in the first with Erik MacNeil breaking the ice at 4:43. Picton’s Aiden Treverton responded by converting a Cole Stevenson pass at 8:22.
In the second, Napanee scored the lone goal in the frame as Issac Brown lit the lamp at 12:51 to push the Raiders ahead 2-1. Pirates net minder Nolan Lane was busy and kept the game close, making 21 stops in the frame.
In the third, Picton was lackadaisical to start and Trent Williams burned the Pirates twice in the opening 2:18 to push the visitors to a 4-1 final.
ON BOARD WITH THE PIRATES: The Pirates wish good luck to all the Prince Edward County Kings clubs taking part in the annual Milk Tournament this weekend. Upwards of 50 clubs from Ontario will be in the area this week playing games in Picton, Wellington and Deseronto.
