The Otter Energy U11 Prince Edward County Kings didn’t spare the offence in Game One of their OMHA Semi Finals playdown and will be playing for a berth in the regional finals.
The Kings crowned the Tweed Hawks in Game One of their Tier III semi-finals series. Should they punch their ticket on Monday night in Wellington against the Hawks, the Kings will draw the winner of the Bancroft Jets-Norwood Hornets series for a chance to play in the Tier III OMHA championship tournament in Windsor early next month.
In Game One in Tweed on Sunday, the Kings erupted for eight goals in the opening two periods and held on for an 8-5 win.
Four different Kings touched the twine in the opening frame. Knox Stevens, Laik Cole, Austin Howe, and Owen Cameron all lit the lamp while Carson Norman picked up a pair of helpers in the first as the Kings shot out to a 4-1 margin.
In the second, the clubs combined for half a dozen goals in the final two and half minutes of the period.
Tweed’s Hayden Gourdier cut the Kings lead in half at 2:31 at 4-2 but the tally only spurred on the Kings.
At 2:07, Cruz Thompson and Mr. Cole teamed up to spring Logan Cox who fired home a goal to restore the County’s three goal lead.
Just 25 seconds later, Mr. Howe notched his second of the match to make it a 6-2 game but the second period action was far from over.
Mr. Gourdier doubled down at 1:16 to get the host Hawks back in the contest but the nonplussed locals marched up the ice in successive shifts to break open the contest.
Mr. Stevens bagged his second of the series at 57 seconds and then Mr. Thompson fired a dagger at the 46 second mark to make it an 8-3 game.
Tweed’s Coleton Walker had the only marker of the third as Kings goaltender Lane Bulten came up big for his squad, protecting a sizable lead.
Game Two goes in Wellington on Tuesday. Face off is at 6:30. Should a third and final game be needed, it will be played the following night in Picton at 6 p.m.
