You could hear the medals clink clink as she made her way to the horseshoe at Shire Hall last week. Kim Pothier is a sportswoman for all seasons.
First, this Special Olympian returned from the National winter games in Calgary with a haul of speed skating medals.
Then, fresh off her triumphs at the Olympic Oval, Ms. Pothier dominated at the Ontario Spring Games in Waterloo in May. She was golden in the 400m Freestyle, 100m Individual Medley, 100m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and silver in the 50m relay. Obviously, she was slowed down having to wait for the others.
On Tuesday night, Council presented Ms. Pothier with a Civic Recognition Award, honouring not just her speed skating, but her abilities in the swimming pool.
Whether the water is frozen or fresh, Ms. Pothier feels right at home. But as with most two-sport athletes, one activity slightly edges out the other.
“I like swimming better, but only because I started swimming when I was six. I didn’t start skating until I was 15, so I’ve had to train a lot more for skating,” she said. “I love the water and I’ve always enjoyed being in it.”
Mayor Steve Ferguson made remarks on behalf of Council, noting Ms. Pothier’s outstanding achievements. “This remarkable performance is a testament to your dedication, skill and unwavering spirit,” he noted.
“Your accomplishments not only highlight your exceptional talent but also serve as an inspiration to your fellow athletes, coaches, and our community. Your journey and achievements exemplify the spirit of true sportsmanship and perseverance. Keep shining and inspiring others with your incredible athleticism and dedication.”
Ms. Pothier is looking forward to swimming at the 2026 Special Olympics Summer Games in Medicine Hat, AB.
“If I do well there, I’m hoping to go to the Worlds in Chile in 2027.”
