On Sunday in Wellington, County favourite Cue The Funk cranked out familiar toe-tapping hits of the 70s and 80s. The street dance plan was adjusted slightly due to weather. The band took shelter at the Memorial Park bandstand where young and old grooved on the green grass dance floor.
Later that evening, thousands turned their eyes to Rotary Beach, where the Wellington Recreation Committee hosted a brilliant fireworks display. The 20-minute show cost the Committee around $15,000. Part of the total came from per capita funding from the municipality; the rest through donations solicited by the local firefighters.
During the day, the village’s Main Street was a hub of patriotic activity. The annual parade featured plenty of smiling faces and red and white floats. A C-130 from CFB Trenton made several passes in the sky above, gracing the parade with its presence. Between them, the Wellington farmers market, strawberry social, lunch on the lawn and playtime in the park had the downtown core bursting.
In Picton, about 500 people turned up for a Picton BIA party in Benson Park which also featured Cue the Funk, free cotton candy and sno cones, a dunk tank, and children’s games. The event really went to the dogs later in the afternoon: the Picton Recreation Committee held its annual Canada Day Dog Walk and Parade in the Park.
