Field naturalist, author and former Gazette columnist Terry Sprague was among 22 Outstanding Ontario Seniors recognized June 25 at Queen’s Park.
The Ontario Senior Achievement Awards, founded in 1986, recognize those making a difference in the lives and well-being of people in Ontario through their community service and humanitarian efforts.
Recipients make lasting contributions to their communities and empower fellow seniors by leading cultural, artistic, educational and health-care initiatives that foster engagement and inclusion.
“These awards recognize the wisdom, generosity, and positive impact of seniors in all aspects of daily life, said the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
It’s difficult to encapsulate Mr. Sprague’s contributions to Prince Edward County into a single paragraph. At the presentation, the Honourable Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, noted the long-time Sophiasburgh resident has dedicated his life to nature, conservation, and public education.
“Raised on a Big Island farm, his early curiosity led to a 50-year career as a naturalist and writer, producing over 6,200 ‘Nature Stuff’ columns. At 80, Terry remains an active volunteer in Prince Edward County and the Quinte region. During the pandemic, he hosted monthly nature webinars for seniors, fostering connection and curiosity. His enduring passion continues to inspire future naturalists and enrich his community.”
In addition to serving as a weekly columnist for the Picton Gazette, Napanee Beaver and scores of other periodicals throughout the Quinte area, Mr Sprague’s humorous looks at County life have spawned a collection of books, including Naked In the Sand, Up Before 5: The Family Farm, The Two of Us and Growing Up Big Island.
His easy speaking style, quick wit, and razor sharp memory have made Mr. Sprague a valuable resource to many seeking recollections of County days gone by and the natural state of this island community.
Mr. Sprague was nominated for his award by Community Care for Seniors.
