It looks like fibre optic services will be expanded along Picton Main Street.

Councillors supported a noise bylaw exemption request from Cogeco during last week’s committee-of-the-whole meeting. The motion, if approved by council at their regular meeting on Nov. 14, would allow Cogeco to work at night along Picton Main Street from Shire Hall to Chapel Street between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for two consecutive weekday nights in November. The work has been tentatively planned for Nov. 21 and 22 with a rain date of Nov. 28 and 29.

A staff report presented to the committee last week says in 2016 Cogeco installed fibre optic cable on Main Street from a connection point on McFarland Drive to Shire Hall. The report indicates Cogeco recently expanded fibre conduit along Main Street and it now terminates at Chapel Street. The conduit was installed in order to expand fibre services to the downtown core. The project is supported by the municipality as part of ongoing rural network expansion, the report says.

In order to install the fibre optic cable in the conduit, access vaults must be opened and equipment staged along Main Street. Having the work conducted at night is expected to reduce the impact to traffic and pedestrians and speed completion of the work.

No sidewalk or road closures are expected as a result of the fibre-optic installation.
