House of Falconer helps group spread message about inclusive language

Since the late 1990s, the County Advocates have been working to educate the community about how all people should be treated with dignity and respect.

For its latest project, the group of over 40 adults and youth are joining a provincial movement to “Stamp out the R-Word.” They’ll use the holiday season to raise awareness about the harm caused by the use of the terms “retard” or “retarded” in conversation.

Members of the County Advocates say use of those words devalues people and the meaningful contributions that each citizen makes to others and the overall community.

They’re hoping their campaign will encourage society to use respectful and inclusive language of people with disabilities and helps members of society to be conscious of the words they are using.

“Society may not be aware of how their language can devalue others, and this is an opportunity to raise awareness,” said Danita Norton, a supervisor with Community Living Prince Edward.

The House of Falconer has joined with the County Advocates to help their efforts to spread this important message.

At the Walton Street venue’s Christmas Markets Dec. 8 and again, this Saturday, Dec. 15, the advocates will be on hand to “Spread the Word to End the Word.” Members of the public are encouraged to stop by the market to learn more about the campaign and to peruse the Christmas gift ideas on display. The market is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Dec. 24.

In addition to education, the County Advocates have worked on promoting equality with regard to important issues like employment, housing, accessibility and citizenship. They’ve also been active fundraisers for several community causes.
