The distinct smell of petrochemicals at Marsh Creek was still present late Tuesday afternoon as the municipality and the Ministry of the Environment tried to trace the source of a contamination incident.

Both field sampling and further investigation are underway in accordance with provincial direction. Environmental consultants have been engaged to support cleanup efforts.
County staff remain on site, alongside MOECP officials, fire services, and water department personnel.
A vacuum truck positioned near Delhi Park close to the York Street entrance was removing water from the creek until about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Other vacuum trucks were visible on Main Street, removing water from storm sewer drains.
At this time, the situation is considered contained. Drinking water supplied by the Picton Water Treatment Plant remains safe for consumption. Monitoring of the water supply will continue.
The municipality recommends keeping pets away from the area extending from the south side of Picton Harbour to just east of the municipal boat launch.
The municipality says protecting the environment and public safety is its top priority. The municipality will continue to work closely with provincial authorities and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
This is a developing story.
