The Wellington Dukes came out of the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s All Star Break with plenty of spring in their stride, dismantling the visiting Aurora Tigers Sunday at Lehigh Arena 8-1.
The locals beat a path to the Aurora net early and often, notching four goals in the opening period.
Corey Jewitt opened the scoring with a power play tally at the 4:20 mark. Then, at the midway point of the period, Wellington exploded for three more goals in just under three minutes of play.
Zach Carrier would pot his first OJHL goal at 10:27 followed by a pair of Ryan Schapp markers to make it a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
In the second, Wellington extended their lead with goals from Caleb MacDonald and Sacha Trudel before Aurora’s Adam Matar finally solved Shane Shelest at 12:38.
In the third, Mr Schaap capped off his hat trick effort with a power play goal at 7:25 and then just under four minutes later, Cory Jewitt book ended the scoring with his 21st of the season.
Shelest made 21 saves for Wellington. William Goumas went the distance in the Tigers’ cage, facing 45 volleys.
Wellington is in action again on Friday when they skate of to Lindsay to battle the Muskies.
The Dukes are back at home on Sunday afternoon to play the Cobourg Cougars at 2:30 p.m.
