May 1-7 is Emergency Preparedness Week.

This national event is intended to alert the public to ways in which they can be prepared for natural disasters. Natural disasters are known to be increasing in frequency and intensity with the progression of climate change. Prince Edward County is not immune to the ravages of these occurrences.

Bearing this in mind, the municipality is urging residents to “be ready for anything”.

“We want to encourage our residents to take action to become better prepared for the range of emergencies they could face in the County,” said Fire Chief Chad Brown of the Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue.

While natural disasters may be beyond our control, the municipality is reminding everyone there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk and impact of emergencies. Individuals, communities, governments, and the private sector all share responsibility in emergency management and the common goal of preventing and managing disasters.

The municipality is recommending residents implement these three simple steps to help protect themselves and take care of loved ones during a crisis:

•Know the Risks: It is important to know the risks in your community to be better prepared for their impact.

•Make an Emergency Plan: Creating a plan will help you and your family know what to do in case of an emergency.

•Build an Emergency Kit: The kit should contain everything you and your family will need to stay safe and comfortable for up to 72 hours and should be assembled considering the specific needs of your family members. In honour of Emergency Preparedness Week, The County will be sharing resources to help residents take action and be prepared. Follow the municipality on Facebook and Twitter to learn more.
