There was some significant meter feeding happening in Picton over December.

The annual Food for Learning ‘Feed the Meter’ campaign is being touted as a success as downtown Christmas shoppers pushed $2,881 into parking meters in Picton.

The Food for Learning organization helps to provide students in the Quinte area universal access to healthy meals and snacks while at school in order to develop lifelong healthy  eating habits, stay engaged in their learning and feel a sense of belonging while tending to their studies.

“The goal of student nutrition programs is to ensure that all students have daily access to breakfast, lunch and/or snacks while at school. When students eat better, they are engaged in their learning, experience a sense of belonging at school and develop lifelong healthy eating habits,” Food for Learning coordinator Kellie Brace said.

In total, the communities of Belleville, Quinte West and Prince Edward County raised a total of $37,502.93 through meter donations, sponsor donations and community donations.

Locally, The Picton BIA, The Corporation of the County of Prince Edward, the Prince Edward Federation of  Agriculture, Prinzen Ford and the Rotary Club of Picton are program sponsors.

“Thank you to all members of the community who helped raise these funds by putting their change in the parking meters and to all sponsors and municipalities who continuously support our efforts. You made this campaign a success, our students will eat well because of you,” said Vicky Struthers, Community Development Coordinator for Food for Learning.
