If someone on your shopping list is hoping for a gizmo, gadget, or other high tech thingy and you’re not quite sure how to navigate the options, the library can help. The library’s tech help team have experience with most of the common phones, ereaders, tablets, game consoles, and smartwatches, and are able to help you decide on what might suit you or your recipient. You can book a one-on-one appointment which can be held over the phone, through video chat, or in person, by calling Aaron at (613) 476-5962. Best of all, no sales pitch – they’ll provide suggestions or guidance in understanding the options available.

The tech team can also assist you with creating your own holiday gifts in the library’s Community Makerspace. You can create your own one of a kind embroidered items like tshirts and tote bags, with help every step of the way. You can also use the Silhouette electronic cutting machine to create vinyl decals, make iron on decals and elaborate holiday cards. You can also 3D print something – no experience required! For example, if a loved one plays board games with lots of small pieces, print custom boxes that can keep all of the pieces together. Make a keychain with their name, or anything else you can dream up. If you have an idea but you’re not sure if, or how, it can be done, connect with us and we’ll help talk you through the possibilities. The machines are at the Picton Branch Library, but we can send finished pieces to any branch of the library for you to collect there.

As we reach the end of the calendar year, you might be starting to think about what your goals are for 2021. If you want to learn something new or expand on your tech skills, the library can help. Aaron will soon be putting together the technology workshop schedule for 2021 and could use your help. Connect with him by email [email protected] or call (613) 476-5962 to share your thoughts for what you’d like to learn. Workshop options are nearly endless – want to hone your basic computer skills, master Excel, use WordPress, create social media graphics for your business, or improve your internet safety skills? Just ask, and we will use this information to shape the schedule of workshops for the next year. If you would rather learn one on one, individual help will always be available too.
