The year’s end saw an innovative and dedicated farmer with a larger-than-life legacy, and a hero who drowned in a valiant and successful rescue of his young nephew posthumously recognized with Civic Recognition Awards.
The family of the late Clifford Foster were at Shire Hall at last week’s regular Council meeting to accept the award for Mr. Foster, which was conferred by Mayor Steve Ferguson.
The Mayor, who also spoke at Mr. Foster’s celebration of life in September, recalled the cherished member of the Prince Edward County community as a man who exuded generosity and kind-heartedness while serving as a shining example to the County’s agriculture community.
“Clifford was a pioneer in adopting cutting-edge farming techniques that ensured the prosperity of Fosterholm Farms for future generations.
“His dedication to excellence in farming was evident in every aspect of his work, from soil health management to crop rotation strategies. Clifford’s efforts not only enhanced the productivity of his farm but also set a benchmark for agricultural practices in our region.”
Family friend Tara Wilkinson nominated Mr. Foster for the honour. Fosterholm Farms celebrated its 100th anniversary earlier this year.
At Council November 26, Mayor Ferguson presented the family of James Badgley with a civic recognition award that honoured the life-saving efforts of the beloved son and uncle. Mr. Badgley, 35 at the time, tragically lost his life on August 4th at Point Petre while saving his nephew from drowning.
The Mayor noted Mr. Badgley’s bravery extended far beyond that fateful day. In 2015, he was awarded the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery for risking his life in an effort to rescue someone from a burning building in Belleville.
“His final heroic act, diving into treacherous waters to save his nephew, exemplified his unwavering courage and selflessness,” the Mayor said. “We honour James’s memory and recognize his extraordinary courage and dedication. His actions serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can have through acts of heroism and compassion.”
On behalf of Council, Mayor Ferguson offered the Badgley family the deepest respect and gratitude for James’s courage and the ultimate sacrifice he made.
“May his legacy of love and bravery continue to shine brightly in your hearts,” he added.
