When Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States in 2021, the Waupoos resident and composer didn’t think for a moment he would need to revisit the song.
“Then Trump got elected again so I said, ‘Well I guess I have to go finish this thing’,” he laughs.
Mr. Walker’s band is the Waupoos Barn Incident, comprised of session artists, composers and touring musicians. The stunningly arranged comic music video, billed a “Canadian response to unfolding events,” takes the would-be dictator Donald Trump and his enabler, Elon Musk, to task on tariffs, human rights abuses, and annexation plans for Canada, Panama and Greenland. The lyrics are perhaps the best thing about the song, which recalls a Leonard Cohen production. It reassures those of us still rooted in reality and aghast at the direction the United States is taking that others are right there with us.
It’s a horror show
lyrics from “Horror Show: Elon and the Dictator”
It’s a horror show
Everywhere I go
It’s a horror show
Even Buffalo
It’s a horror show
Mr. Walker’s partner, Michèle Hozer, is an accomplished director, known most recently for the documentary, Atomic Reaction. She shot part of the Horror Show video at the couple’s home studio.
“It’s a statement and my tiny little attempt to help the cause,” says Mr. Walker. “I have friends in the U.S. who actually think this guy is intelligent. Now I don’t have to get in arguments with people about him, I just say watch the video, that’s my opinion.”
