Celebrated throughout the world, Dec. 5 was International Volunteer Day, and recently Hospice Prince Edward recognized some of their volunteers with prestigious awards.

Hospice Prince Edward recognized these volunteers with the June Callwood Volunteer Award: Carol McIntosh (2020), Anne Howells (2021), and Sandra Ferguson (2022).

This award was named in honour of June Callwood, a long-time advocate of hospice, a community activist, author and recipient of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. June’s name is synonymous with integrity and compassion. Her words and work touched the lives of generations of Canadians in need.

The recipients of the Spirit of Hospice Award possess the qualities of selfless service, generosity of spirit, compassion, and a commitment to excellence as a volunteer: Art Miersma (2020), Linda Torney and Susan Desveaux (2021), and Jill Johnson (2022).

“Hospice Prince Edward is extending this day of recognition to the full week!,” said Sandra Barnes, Executive Director of Hospice Prince Edward. “We’ll be greeting our volunteers in person to extend our appreciation for the time they devote to our clients. A special thank you to Lily’s Café for donating gift cards for our volunteers to enjoy.”

Hospice Prince Edward is a charitable organization that provides quality of life, dignity in death and grief and bereavement support for all those living with or affected by a life limiting illness.

This residential hospice has served over 300 residents since opening in 2013. An additional 400 families have benefited from their Visiting Volunteers, Caregiver Support Groups, and Grief and Bereavement services.
