One of Canada’s fastest growing sports will soon have a new home in Picton.
At its meeting Tuesday, Council voted to create space for six dedicated courts at Delhi Park. The motion asks staff to continue to work with the Prince Edward Pickleball group on orientation, design, communication, and budget considerations for a six-court spread at the former T-ball field.
PEP Chair Stephanie Roth told Council the group has raised just over $100,000 for the project. Fundraising efforts will continue to build up coffers in advance of the project.
A staff report will inform council on the budget required. Council will have final say on construction.
“Knowing the future location is very important,” said Ms. Roth. “It allows PEP to obtain quotes and we can use that information for fundraising. It’s a nice asset to know where the fundraising dollars are going,” Ms. Roth told council.
The prospective six-court site will fit within the former softball diamond. The site would also allow for future expansion. Ms. Roth noted that the project won’t affect any of the nearby old growth trees. There are existing power sources for eventual lighting and the infrastructure for washrooms.
A bubble dome for all season play is also a possibility. Care for neighbouring residents by way of sound attenuation is also an important part of the project.
A geotechnical survey of the site is being undertaken at the municipality’s expense. If the group can continue its fundraising efforts, pickleball play at Delhi could be in full swing by 2026.
