The library has a lot to celebrate this summer. Three parties are planned across Prince Edward County this month.

First, on Saturday, August 3 we’ll celebrate Princess Amelia’s birthday with the Ameliasburgh Heritage Hub. As Hub member Janet Comeau explains, “Princess Amelia was the youngest and dearest child of King George III. She is the namesake of Ameliasburgh. Her sister Princess Sophia is the namesake of Sophiasburgh, and PEC is named after their brother Edward. As much as Amelia was beautiful, she suffered from ill health most of her life. While at the seaside for a cure, she fell in love with Charles Fitzroy, an equerry 21 years her senior.  A legal marriage was not possible because of the Royal Marriages Act, yet Amelia never gave up hope and sometimes used the initials A.F.R. (Amelia FitzRoy). Sadly, she died quite young at the age of 27 from tuberculosis, leaving everything in her will to Charles Fitzroy.”

The party includes events at the Museum and the Genealogical Centre as well as a book sale organized by the Friends of the Ameliasburgh and Consecon Branches of the Library. Find the Heritage Hub on Facebook to see the complete schedule for the day or drop by the library.

On Saturday, August 10, join us for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the renovated Picton Branch Library. Dahlia Donovan, who participated in the groundbreaking, will join us again to officially cut the ribbon at 2 p.m., launching a celebratory afternoon of music and children’s activities with refreshments.  We will be  unveiling new resources in the Active Play Room made possible by the Stark Family Fund. Cathy Sheppard of Happy Faces the County will join us from 3- 4 p.m. for face painting, and plans are underway for a special event with Theatre Roulant, crafts by Oriella Stillo, and more.

On Friday, August 23, The Friends of the Bloomfield-Hallowell Branch Library will host a 101st birthday party for the branch. Although library service in Bloomfield extends much further back, the current library building is 101 years old. A spectacular silent auction starts August 13; be sure to drop by and bid. On the day of the party, the Friends will have cake, children’s activities and entertainment. It will provide an opportunity to check out the newly re-arranged space, welcoming everyone to come together to celebrate.

We’re so delighted to have such a celebration-packed summer thanks to the incredible volunteers who make it all possible.
