The newly expanded Picton Branch Library is certainly a cause for celebration. After many years of dreaming, planning, and construction we are thrilled to invite everyone to a donor and volunteer appreciation event on Tuesday, December 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. One of the most exciting parts of this project is the incredible community support that has made it possible. Recently, the list of identified donors was tallied and tips the scales at more than 900 people – but that does not count the people who donated at the circulation desk, purchased a tag on one of the tag days, gave at the cash register at various stores, attended fundraising events, or contributed in another way. That’s why the “donor and volunteer” appreciation event comes with an open invitation – because we recognize that there are so many more people who have contributed to the project than we could invite individually.
At the event you will have the opportunity to tour the newly built library spaces, as well as the freshly renovated original Carnegie building. Check out the recording studio, musical instrument lending library, makerspace and tech areas, the refreshed children’s room and new active play area and of course the expanded print collection. Try out the pedal desks, see the new meeting rooms, and take in the beautiful green wall, and more. Whether you are a longtime library lover or a new resident who has been meaning to drop in, you won’t want to miss this event.
The new spaces have already made new programs possible. An event with artist Tom Wilson and a recent DimeStories event organized by Blizzmax each drew larger crowds than we could have previously made space for. An Explore 4-H program, made possible by the Stark Family Fund through the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area, occurs weekly in the flex space. These are just a few of the exciting new offerings the enhanced space makes possible.
Landscaping in the rear of the building and a few other finishing touches are still in the works to make the building fully “complete” with a grand opening planned for 2024. However, the interior is largely finished and we cannot wait another moment to celebrate. RSVP by calling (613) 476-5962. Our thanks to the dedicated and enthusiastic members of the volunteer fundraising committee for putting this event together.
UPCOMING: We’ll be open and participating in Ameliasburgh Christmas in the Village on December 2, Light it Up Wellington on December 2 and for the Picton Santa Claus Parade on Sunday December 3.
