Does a child have the right to know a parent’s history? Does the key to one’s identify lie within that history?
Author Jo Sorochinsky thought she understood her family’s past but always wondered why her father wouldn’t speak about his youth in detail, though he painted his early years in Vienna as filled with light and music.

Jo had been raised as a Catholic in Ireland and in Canada, and never knew why her father had fled Vienna to Ireland as a teenager in 1939. Decades passed before her father would talk about the life that he had left behind in Vienna. Sorochinsky will join us online Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. to discuss her book, Dancing with My Father in which she details her experience discovering her family’s history.  Sorochinsky is a former County resident we are delighted that she will be able to share her story with us.

Register to participate on Zoom for what promises to be an interesting conversation about family history identity and the book.

If you need assistance, please contact David at (613) 476-5962 and he will be happy to help you! If you require technology to participate you can borrow a device from the library or reserve a space to watch from one of the library’s computers at any of the library’s six branches.

Did you know most of the library’s previous online programs are available on our Youtube channel? We have held several programs that might be of interest if you are curious about family history.

Ian McKelvie joined us in January 2021 and the recording of the talk is available to be viewed at your convenience. Ian used DNA testing to conduct family history research and through this research was able to uncover details about his family history that had been unknown for decades. If you are interested in house histories, you can find a recorded talk in which Molly McGowan of the Archives talked to property owner Braydon Scully and Liz Driver of the Prince Edward County Heritage Advisory Committee about the process of pursuing heritage designation for a home. Molly also created a video overview of the use of Ancestry.com Library Edition, which is a resource you can access online with your library card to research your own family history.

Ancestry Library Edition is normally only available from computers within the library but it has been made available from everywhere at least until September 30 2021. You can find all of these at peclibrary.org/youtube.

While are on the library’s channel you can take in other previous author talks and hear from the incredible array of writers we have been able to book over the past year and a half – including Jane Christmas, David Frum, Dr. Joanna Kafarowski and more.
