JOHNSTON, Sterling Paul
will be lovingly remembered by his wife Darlene (Wood) of 46 years, their daughter, Maureen Johnston of Picton, ON and his daughters Deborah Rose of Surrey, BC and Kelli Cote of Cultus Lake, BC, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.Sterling was predeceased by his parents Allan and Hazel (Johnston) Platt. He is survived by his brother Douglas Platt (Elizabeth). Sterling was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on the 19th of September, 1938 and moved to Picton in 1945. He graduated from P.E.C.I. in 1956 and started work with H.J. McFarland Company for 23 years becoming their payroll clerk. He then worked for the Town of Picton, before amalgamation, for 20 years as Deputy Clerk and then CEO. Sterling was an avid volunteer. Starting in his late teens he was Cub Leader for the Boy Scouts. He was involved with the Kinsmen Club for 10 years. He volunteered with the Alzhieimer Society for 10 years and the Cancer Society for 25 years receiving the prestigious Medal of Courage Award for his outstanding contributions and always giving freely of his time. Sterling was a keen golfer and sat on the Board of Directors for 35 years and President of the Picton Golf Club for 5 different years. Sterling enjoyed music and dancing and attended many concerts and open mics. He loved baseball and took many trips to watch his favourite ball team, the Blue Jays, but his favourite sport was his daily walks in the Town of Picton covering many kilometres. Sterling and Darlene spent many cherished hours with their grandchildren, Kyler and Grace, taking them camping and on various outings and trips. Sterling was a man with a generous heart for whom honesty and trustworthiness served as the cornerstone of his character. Sterling will be fondly remembered by his family, many friends and his fellow volunteers. At Sterling’s request there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
