A new acquisition and the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s goaltender of the month helped the Wellington Dukes snap a three-game slide and bust back into the win column on Friday. Then on Sunday, the Dukes exploded for three goals to out shoot the visiting Stoufville Spirit 3-2.
A pair of wins helped to shine up the Wellington record which moved to 20-13-2.
Prior to hosting the Pickering Panthers Friday, the OJHL announced that Jack Lisson was the Warrior Goaltender for the month of November. Mr. Lisson posted a 3-0-1 record with a 0.75 goals Against Average and a sparkling .975 Save Percentage.
The Oakville native picked up in December where he left off in November, making 27 stops to help his club to a 5-2 win over the visiting Cats.
Newcomer Ryan Schaap, fresh from the Markham Royals, paced the Wellington offence with a pair of tallies while Colin Smith, Pana Efraimidis and Dmitri-Alexander Tzaferis also scored.
On Sunday, it was Mr Lisson’s goaltending partner that was shining in the Wellington net and giving the Dukes a chance to escape with a pair of points.
Shane Shelest made 18 saves for Wellington in a 3-2 win that could be best described as a chippy, special teams affair.
The Spirit opened the scoring in the first as Odaro Ewere would pot shorthanded tally at the 12:45 mark.
In the second Wellington responded with a shortie of their own as Mr. Tzaferis was sprung by Connor Hunt at the 2:44 mark.
The Dukes would get their first lead of the contest on the power play when Corey Jewitt fired home his 15th of the campaign. But just before the extended Wellington power play was at its end, one time Duke Cam Kosurko would walk in and beat Mr. Shelest just 29 seconds after Wellington had pulled ahead.
But just 21 seconds after that, Wellington would fire back with a Nick Dipaolo tally that push the Dukes ahead for good.
Wellington went 1-for-10 on the man advantage while Stoufville was 0-for-10.
Wellington hosts North York this eveining for a rare Tuesday night home game and then play the Panthers at home again on Friday.
