How great was it that our own Cameron Pero won the Ontario Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament at Black Bear Ridge!
By doing so, he joined his father Mike Pero, who also won the Ontario Amateur in 1989. They made history by becoming the first father /son to accomplish this feat.
This win brought back wonderful memories of Mike’s win in 1989. Shortly after that, a sign was erected at our course entrance, now long gone, stating that this was the home of Mike Pero. A new one should be erected stating that this is the home of Mike and Cameron Pero, winners of the 1989 & 2023 Ontario Men’s Amateur Championships. I sure hope that my good friend, the late Larry Pero, was looking down on his family’s accomplishments. Larry, a gifted golfer in his own right was also a tremendous athlete. I recall playing a round with Larry and Malcolm McFarland on our old nine-hole course, considered one of the best nine-hole courses in Canada. Larry shot 31- 31 62. The card was posted on the club house wall for many years.
Recently, my wife and I were invited to the Women’s Canadian Open as guests of Lawrence Applebaum CEO of Golf Canada in the Sky Box. When my wife Sally was unable to attend, I phoned Lawrence and asked if my good friend Mike Pero could join us.
I suggest that we keep our eye on this fine young man, Cameron Pero, who I predict will make us very proud no matter what he puts his mind to.
I end by commenting on the recent letter by Mike Bondy that clearly set out the lack of ethics by the former GM/Coach of the Wellington Dukes and now the GM/Coach of Trenton.
The OJHL leadership should not tolerate this conduct. As a Wellington season ticket holder, I am disgusted by this.
