Regarding the Letter to the Editor Gazette error on the 49th Parallel ‘inexcusable’ May 18, 2023.
The writer, Don Love, says that “…the majority of our mutual boundary is the 49th parallel”, and asked the Gazette to “please show a correction…”.
According to an article by Philip Jackman in the Globe and Mail published in 2011, the residents of seven of the 10 Canadian Provinces lie below the 49th Parallel.
All of the Maritime provinces and the Capital of Newfoundland, St. John’s, lie below the 49th Parallel.
About 60 or 70 per cent of Canadians live south of the 49th . The largest cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City lie south of the 49th. Maybe an apology was not the best way to clear up the mis-statement, since two errors do not make one correction.
While the Editor’s note indicated that ‘…the 49th Parallel is synonymous with the Canadian – U.S. Boundary…” when we use that boundary we are leaving out a vast stretch of our beautiful Country.
