Just after it gave out over 100 snowsuits in 2023, the local branch of the Quinte Keep Kids Warm Campaign is already off to a great start for 2024.
A pair of large donations last month from the Prince Edward OPP detachment ensures warmth for next year.
The campaign supports working families by providing winter wear for children. It is administered through local police services from Picton to Marmora. Parents and care givers register for the program in September and pick up new snow suits, mittens and hats in early November. Members of the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary support the program by donating a large amount of hand crafted wool wear as do to other local knitters.
Local businesses also support the Keep Kids Warm campaign.
Bay of Quinte Mutual Insurance recently donated $10,000 to support the 2024 campaign. Picton Foodland customers contributed $1,825 by way of an in-store challenge.
“Our cashiers had a contest to see who could sell the most paper mittens and the customers really got involved and supported this great and worthwhile initiative,” said store owner Jamie Yeo.
“We are just so grateful to everyone who steps up each year and makes the Keep Kids Warm campaign going strong,” said coordinator Barb Sills. “From the ladies who knit, to those at the churches, to the private donors, the businesses, and the Wellington Dukes, this program is so well supported. We and the community are so grateful.”
