An allocation of new Long Term Care beds is coming to Prince Edward County.
Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith announced Friday the Ontario government is adding 31 new and upgrading 97 beds at Hallowell House west of Picton.The redevelopment is part of the government’s $6.4 billion commitment to build more than 30,000 net new beds by 2028 and 28,000 upgraded long-term care beds across the province.
“We know there is a great demand for long-term care beds in Prince Edward County and across our region now and our aging demographics and fast-growing communities suggest the need is only going to increase,” said Smith. “Our government is taking the necessary steps to build modern beds so that people can receive the care they need closer to home.”
Wendy Gilmour, the Senior Vice-President of Long-Term Care at Revera, which owns and operates Hallowell House, welcomed news of the provincial investment.
“The redevelopment and expansion of Hallowell House demonstrates Revera’s commitment to renewing our long-term care infrastructure. This new, larger 128-bed Picton home will incorporate the latest design standards to create a safe, home-like environment for residents, better working conditions for staff, and greater access to care in Prince Edward County,” said Gilmour. “Revera looks forward to working with the Ministry of Long-Term Care and the County of Prince Edward in getting this project underway.”
Including the project at Hallowell House, there are now 533 new and 395 upgraded long-term care beds in development, under construction, or completed in the area, including the following projects:
“Our government has a plan to fix long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe, and comfortable homes for our seniors,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Long-Term Care. “When the construction at this home is complete, it will be a place for 128 local seniors to call home, near their family and friends.”
The plan is built on three pillars: staffing and care; accountability, enforcement, and transparency; and building modern, safe, comfortable homes for seniors.
