An unmarked Ontario Provincial Police could be seen outside Prince Edward Collegiate Institute on Tuesday morning as members of the Prince Edward detachment continue to investigate an online threat made last week.
Community Services and Media Officer Aaron Miller confirmed to the Gazette Police were made aware of a threat made by an individual who claimed they were going to bring a firearm to the K-12 school Tuesday.
“The investigation is ongoing. The OPP believe there’s no immediate risk to the public,” Miller said.
In a statement emailed to parents early Tuesday morning, it was disclosed “a rumour about a potential threat against PECI was reported to staff over the weekend.”
“I assure you that I take all threats very seriously. I am cooperating with Prince Edward County OPP through their investigation and have been advised by OPP that there is no risk to public safety,” The statement, confirmed by Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board to made by PECI Principal Andrew Ross, said. “PECI will be open today, as usual. Our school continues to be a safe learning and working environment. While I realize this news may cause concern, police have advised that there is no risk to public safety.”
