Stalled traffic is returning to Picton Main. During construction, one lane of traffic will remain open at all times. Signage will identify an alternate route along County Roads 6 and 5.
The multi-year project, which started at the corner of Bridge and Main in 2022, now comes to 454 County Road 49 to Folkard Lane.
The three-year reconstruction will finish next summer.
Council awarded a $10.448 million tender to R.W. Tomlinson Limited at its August 28 meeting. It is within the existing construction budget by $2 million.
Underground infrastructure is being increased in size to accommodate flows from the County’s new long-term care home and various proposed developments along the roadway.
The reconstruction is partly funded by the province’s Housing-Enabling Core Services Stream for County Road 49. Provincial funding covers up to 50 percent of the roadworks.
In his report to council, Project Manager Jeff Shortt said that means close to $4 million of the cost of Phase 3 will be covered.
“The remaining Picton Main Street Phase 3 roads budget will be put towards the County Road 49 rehabilitation project,” he added.
Council also approved changes to its Traffic Calming policy. Evaluation of public requests for traffic calming measures will improve efficiency, transparency, accountability and consistency in decision-making. The changes are part of a Traffic Advisory Committee review launched in 2024 in response to the installation and then rapid removal of speed humps in Cherry Valley.
